this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, march 2nd, 2015. good morning. i'm lauren lyster in for anne-marie green. this month marks the official start of spring, and in less than a week it will be time to set our clocks forward, but that doesn't mean it's getting any warmer. once again this morning much of the northeast is under winter weather advisories and warnings. while heavy snow and freezing rain is possible from the rockies to the northwest. don champion has more. >> crazy madness. >> reporter: whether you were in flagstaff, arizona -- >> i didn't know how to control my car. i was swerving a lot, and i ran -- basically slid down that hill. >> reporter: -- raleigh, north carolina -- >> your life flashes before your eyes because you don't know if you're going to die. >> reporter: -- or yonkers, new york. are the plows coming through? >> i haven't seen any plows since the other snow last weekend.

>> reporter: -- the weekend gave you no rest from the seemingly endless winter. the latest douse of snow for boston could push the city into record territory for snow in one winter. >> i think we're breaking the record unfortunately. >> reporter: air travel froze. more than 2,500 flights were canceled sunday including more than 250 in dallas. >> it would have been nice to know before we left home so i could have slept in for a little bit longer. ♪ >> reporter: it was a balmy 20 degrees in chicago as hundreds, including lady gaga and actor vince vaughn, took a dip in lake michigan to raise money for the special olympics. meanwhile rainy weather is welcome on the drought-stricken west coast but still problematic. heavy rains triggered a mudslide that shut down a stretch of southern california's pacific coast highway. here in new york city the snow ended late last night, but we're expecting an icy commute this morning. while temperatures will be above

freezing here today, we're expecting more snow tuesday. lauren? >> all right. don champion here in new york. don, thank you. the los angeles police and district attorney's office are investigating a deadly shooting involving the l.a. police department. police shot and killed a homeless man police say was struggling for an officer's gun. the incident was caught on video. a warning, you may find these pictures disturbing. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: a witness had their cell phone camera rolling as the los angeles police and a homeless man got into a con froon confrontation in the city's skid row section around noon on sunday. during the struggle shots were fired and a man was killed. officers responded to the area to investigate a possible robbery. >> when they got to the scene, they made contact with the suspect, and during that contact an altercation occurred. >> reporter: police say during the struggle officers tried to use a taser gun on the man. >> it's not known if the taser struck the suspect, but the

altercation continued, and that altercation then resulted in an officer-involved shooting. >> reporter: this within said the man was fighting with another person in one of the tents on the sidewalk before the officers arrived. >> when they pulled up, they got out of their car and shot the man five times. >> police will review cameras from the area. >> it's going to be a long investigation and we will, you know, get to the bottom of it. >> reporter: so far police can't confirm the number of officers involved or how many shots were fired. danielle nottingham, cbs news, los angeles. today in washington israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu speaks to the largest pro israel lobby in the u.s. it's the speech before congress tomorrow that's causing a stir. there are several layers to the debate include agnew clear deal with iran and how netanyahu ended up with the invitation in the first place. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> lauren, good morning. the invite came from capitol

hill from house speaker john boehner who did a bit of an end run. did not consult the administration. that caused some anger here as well as on capitol hill and it also create add bit of a diversion of attention away from the issue at hand which is this emerging deal between iran, united states, and some other world powers over iran's nuclear future. netanyahu said it's the dangers and risk of that nuclear deal to israel and to the world that brought him here. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is in washington where he will address a joint session of congress tuesday. today he aisle make his case against a deal on iran's nuclear program before the powerful pro-israel group. >> netanyahu's message is that nuclear arms by iran is dangerous to israel and the rest of the the world because it will provoke an arms race. >> reporter: the u.s. and five nations are working to seal an agreement by april that would severely cut iran's nuclear

activities for at least ten years in return for an easing of economic sanctions. netanyahu says concerns over the deal prompted him to accept the invitation from john boehner. >> it's been frankly remarkable to me the extent over which the last five or six weeks the white house has attacked the prime minister, attacked me for wanting to hear from one of our closest allies. >> speaker boehner never roofz the visit, sparking tension with the admin strajsd consulted the white house about the visit, sparking tension with the administration forcing democratics into a choice. >> i'm going to listen respectfully. i'm not going to jump up and down, which is likely to be the posture in that room. >> while democratic senator dianne feinstein plans to attend dozens of democrats will boycott the address. netanyahu's visit also becomes just before elections there where his job is on the line.

mohammed emwazi sent e-mails to their reporter in 2010 which revealed the paranoia that closing in on him. sometimes i feel like a dead man walking, not fearing they may kill me, instead he killed me, maybe i'll take as many pills that i can so that i'll sleep forever. emwazi cites an example when he tried to sell his laptop online and was convinced the buyer who met him was an intelligence agent. he shook his hand and said nice doing business with you, mohammed. emwazi goes on to write, i never give out my first name. it's impossible for him to know my first name. his edgy attitude different in the picture of an elementary school picture although this photo of him as a teenager shows a more menacinger.eing sneer.

he's thought to have been living in this london neighborhood when he contacted the paper and already part of a loose network of young muslims called the north london boys which has sent dozens of jihadi recruits to fight in somalia and syria. and not long after he sent those e-mails, his name appeared in court papers for his alleged association with a group involved in the provision of funds and equipment to somalia for terrorism-related purposes. the north london boys or london boys as it's sometimed called has been referred to as an osama bin laden sleeper cell and that neighborhood has a reputation for a breeding ground. two were accused of bombing the transit in 2005 and live two miles away from emwazi. charlie d'agata, cbs news, london. the assassination of a russian opposition figure brought tens of thousands into the streets of moscow sunday. the memorial march made its way past the kremlin and ended on the bridge where boris nemtsov was gunned down friday.

they successfully completed their third spacewalk. that's just in a week. outside the international space station. they installed antennas and 400 feet of capable. a bit of water got in his helmet again, but he said it was not a big deal. virts paid tribute to "star trek's" actor le nonldonard nimoy. the split-fingered greeting shows earth in the background. nimoy died friday at 83. the texas nurse who contracted ebola is preparing a lawsuit this morning. nina pham got the disease caring for the first person in the u.s. diagnosed with ebola. she said the dallas hospital where she worked and its parent company failed to provide adequate training and equipment. pham says she continues to suffer from side effects. >> disney land's it's a small world is opened again after a fire.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. on the "cbs moneywatch" samsung's newest smartphone and an investigation into lumber liquidators' flooring. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, lauren. >> samsung is taking on the iphone 6. samsung unveiled the galaxy is 6 and is 6 sunday. they're lighter and thinner and narrower than the s 5. they're slightly taller. that i have a metal frame like an iphone and a glass back. it has a higher resolution. those phones will be available in the united states next month. the chinese retailer huawei is getting into the smartwatch business.

beau pierson of network 10 australia shows us what happened when a skydiver had a medical emergency mid jump. >> reporter: free-falling at 12,000 feet when all of a sudden disaster strikes. 22-year-old christopher jones has an epileptic seizure at 9,000 feet, his eyes rolling to the back of his head, his body convulsing. >> my arms go back and i roll onto my back, and, yeah basically for the next 30 seconds i'm freefalling and unconscious. >> his instructor has jumped over 10,000 times. his rescue using every-inch of experience. >> yeah. he started dearching. his feet started coming down and
